- Virtually all modems manufactured today comply with standards sanctioned
- by the ITU-T ( formerly CCITT ) a United Nations sponsored organization.
- They use every letter of the alphabet to categorize their standards. In
- the case of modems, they are published in the V. series, which cover
- interfaces to public analog data networks.
-
- V.34 is the designation for the current popular model which runs at 28,800
- bits per second. A intermediate and non ITU-T sanctioned modem was known
- as V.FC, or V.Fast, or just 28.8. Don't buy a modem at this speed unless
- it states that it is V.34 compatible.
-
- The ITU-T is working on a slight increase in speed to 33,600 bps for the
- V.34, and this is expected in the summer of '96. If they are true to the
- past this new modem will be called V.34 bis ( bis is a french term
- implying second or alternate choice ).
-
- V.42 is a ITU-T recommendation supporting error detection and correction.
- Microcom MNP Class 4 is an optional support with V.42.
-
- V.42bis is a recommendation covering compression using an algorithm
- developed by two Israeli researchers, Liv & Zempel. V.42 & V.42bis are
- pretty much standard support for V.34 modems as well as its predecessors
- such as V.32bis ( 14,400 bps ) and V.32 ( 9600 bps ).
-
- Note that standard fax machines conforming to group 3 use a modem
- conforming to V.29, a half duplex on 2-wire modem running at 9600 bps max.
-
- Enough for now.
